This publication is the product of the cooperation between the Van Gogh Museum, Shell and the Dutch national institution for Cultural heritage, it also proves, once again, the Van Gogh Museum as the absolute authority when it comes to Van Gogh's work and life.
Through this book we gain a profound understanding of the unbelievably large array of techniques and materials van Gogh experimented with in his work. It also shows us the decisions he made regarding surfaces, pigments, inks and paints and how they reflected on the works we all know and love. It also holds a treasure of information regarding his life, the conditions in which he worked and their influence on his paintings and drawings.
This combination of art historical, scientific and technical knowledge offers the reader a great insight in what his work originally looked like and therefore has an influence on the future conservation techniques.
